Asbestos: The Cause of Mesothelioma

Asbestos exposure is the cause of mesothelioma, a rare cancer. Mesothelioma is a cancer of the thin tissue that lines many of your internal organs. Mesothelium is the name given to this thin tissue. Most mesothelioma develops in the tissue surrounding the lungs, known as the pleura. Pleural mesothelioma is the term used to describe this condition. However, mesothelioma can also develop in—

  • The abdomen tissue called the peritoneum.

  • The tissue around the heart, called the pericardium.

  • The tissue around the testicles, called the tunica vaginalis.

As a nation, we pause during the months of April and September to remember those who have been exposed to asbestos or who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma. However, asbestos.com has been helping connect people impacted by mesothelioma and asbestos exposure since 2006. For more information about additional resources, please visit asbestos.com or visit Key Health Care to register to speak with a healthcare professional.
